Yosemite National Park : Two day trip to Yosemite National Park in November '09 with Faysal & Ayesha. No bear sightings despite the signs and warnings everywhere. The stay in Curry Village's tent-cabin was definitely interesting but nothing beats the Giant Sequoias in the Mariposa Grove!

Madrid, Spain : Our first destination in Spain where we spent a night and a day (Saturday-Sunday). Madrid is the capital of Spain since 1562 - a lively metropolis with many pubs, cafes, discotheques and nightclubs open late into the night. Our friend in Madrid said people like to party all night and many head straight to work from there; and from the little time we spent there we didn't doubt our friend's statement!

Granada, Spain : Our second destination in Spain where we spent two nights and two days (Sunday - Tuesday) - and if you don't know this city houses which many consider one of the 10 wonders "The Alhambra". Granada was ruled by many Caliphs, Arabic sultans and dynasties. The Arabic/Muslim empire once stretched right up into the north of Spain. The various Christian groups settled their differences, joined together and steadily drove the Arabs out of Spain. Granada was the last stronghold and finally succumbed to the catholic monarchs in 1492. The Muslim and the Jews were forced to leave the country or convert to Christianity. At the same time Christopher Columbus came to Granada to ask Isabel and Ferdinand for a grant to build ships so that he could conquer the Americas. They gave him the money and I am sure you already know the rest :) Of all the places we visited in Spain, I think Granada was my favorite!

Cordoba, Spain : Our 3rd destination in Spain where we spent a night and two days - Straddling a sharp bend of the Guadalqivir River, Cordoba has a glorious Roman and Moorish past. It's home to Europe's best Islamic sight after Granada's Alhambra. During the Dark Ages, when much of Europe turned inward, Cordoba was known for religious tolerance, artistic expression, and dedication to philosophy and the sciences. The Mezquita or the Mosque which is now a church is the center of focus of every tourist and we were lucky enough to be staying right across it's entrance at Hotel Mezquita.

Seville, Spain : Our fourth destination In Spain where we spent 3 nights and 3 days - the very heart of Andalusian culture, the center of bullfighting and Flamenco music and the home of the largest medieval cathedral with its famous Giralda tower (formerly a mosque). The old town is famous for its tapas bars, flamenco shows and nightlife when streets a filled with people mostly around the Santa Cruz district which surrounds the cathedral.

Algeciras to Tangier by sea : We arrived in Algeciras (Al-Jakheera) by bus in the afternoon from Seville and took the first super-fast ferry Service for Tangier, Morocco. While the ferry was really nice from inside and outside, we encountered a severe storm on our way. The scenic ferry ride became a nightmare with people throwing up all around us, including Nayyiara :) It took us an hour to reach Tangier but because of the rough ride, it felt more like 3 hours.

Fez, Morocco : Our first destination in Morocco after arriving at the Tangier port where we spent two night and two days - it is one of the four so-called "imperial cities" (the others are Marrakech, Meknes and Rabat). It is separated into three parts, Fes el Bali (the old, walled city), Fes-Jdid (new Fes, home of the Mellah), and the Ville Nouvelle (the French-created, newest section of Fes). The Medina of Fes el Bali, the largest of the two medinas of Fes, is believed to be the largest contiguous carfree urban area in the world. Fes el Bali is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It is home of the Qurawin mosque and university (medrassa) which is considered the "oldest existing educational institution in the world" by Guinness Book of World Records founded in 859.

Marrakesh, Morocco : Our second destination in Morocco where we spent 3 nights and 2 days and made a day trip to Essauoria in the middle. We arrived by train from Fez in about 8 hours, primarily because the train tracks are limited and they pass through each major city on its way to Marrakech (Meknes, Rabat, Mohammadia, Casablanca). Marrakesh is filled with tourists, mostly from neighboring European countries - the people are well aware that they are heavily visited by tourists which is why they expect a handsome tip every time they help you or if you want to take a photo of them - pretty ridiculous! But overall, Marrakesh is a very lively city catering primarily to the needs of tourists with Casinos, nightclubs and whatnot. The souks and medina of Marrakesh was not as interesting and authentic as Fez, but it seems to be catching everyone's eyes these days on travel channels and magazines - thus the heavy influx of tourists.

Essauoria, Morocco : Our last destination in Morocco where we only did a day trip, pronounced as As-Sa-Weera was an extremely charming city situated on the Atlantic Coast. Extremely famous for the water-sports, beach and lots of fresh sea-food served fresh right next to the port with views to the sea. The walls were mostly white and doors/windows blue which made the whole town look even more picturesque! I would recommend this small town over Marrakesh!

California Nov 2008 : A much awaited road-trip through the Pacific Coast Highway (Route 1) from Monterey down to LA. In 5 days we went from Los Angeles >> Malibu >> Santa Monica >> Laguna Beach >> San Clemente >> San Diego (Harbor, Old Town, La Jolla) >> Santa Maria >> Monterey >> Pacific Grove >> Carmel >> 17 mile drive followed by the drive down the Pacific Coast Highway >> San Luis Obispo >> Santa Barbara. Every place we visited or passed through had its own unique charm. I guess the places we admired most were Carmel, Laguna Beach, Old town San Diego and the scenic views of the Big Sur.

DC Cherry Blossom Festival, March 2007 : 2007 National Cherry Blossom festival in Washington DC held between March 30 - April 15, 2007. This year Armughan, Rabyya, Raiha, Bilal, Mahwash, Hareem, Yasser and Maha joined us and we had a little picnic next to the lake :) Today was the kite flying day and there were kites everywhere; from dragons to dinosaurs to dora the explorer - everything was a kite! But nothing beats Basant ;)

Masood's going-away & Cabin trip '07 : The evite invitation:

We've been hearing it for years, but never believed that it would actually happen! Nadia and Masood are leaving us for bigger and better things. They've made quite an impact on this place, and will leave a big gap. Their kind heartedness, their fun loving nature, and their ability to make everyone part of their family will be missed tremendously.

We don't have any shortage of memories, but let's make one last memory at Ayesha's house to wish them the best of luck for their new adventure in Vancouver!

Please join us on Wednesday, April 4th at 7:30 PM for dinner and drinks. Since it's a weeknight, please try to be at Ayesha's on time. Thanks to Armughan who was waiting in line at 5:00 AM Sunday morning, we were able to get them the Nintendo Wii. With the left over money we got Nadia a Lois Hill silver ring.

Montreal, Canada : Montreal, our first of four destinations in Quebec province was a 10 hour drive where we were warmly received by Shahid mamu and Zeba mami. Montreal's highlights included the annual jazz festival, the annual fireworks competition (we got to see Australia's display) and the many strolls in the old and new parts of the city; each with its own unique charm. We'll probably go back for the coffee along the street-side cafes!

Mont Tremblant, Canada : Mont Tremblant (or Trembling Mountain) in the Laurentian Mountains, our second of four destinations in Quebec province is only an hour and a half drive from Montreal if you want to miss all the stops at the small villages along the way (we made stops in St. Sauveur, Val David and St. Agathe). Mont Tremblant is pretty much an all play area primarily for the Winters but they have tons of summer activities too; hiking, rock-climbing, golfing, biking, boating, fishing, hunting, go-carting, racing (you name it) all in the lush green mountains. We stayed at the Chateau Boo-Va-Lawn which was nothing less than a mini resort. We'll probably go back for another boating trip on Lake Tremblant or a Scandinavian Spa :)

La Malbaie, Canada : La Malbaie in the Charlevoix region, our third of four destinations in Quebec province is about a two hour drive from Quebec City and there isn't much to stop for along the way. We stayed at the Fairmont Richeleu (a huge mansion) which is a famous resort dating back to the 1800's. The town is pretty much all about the resort and their casino, pools, game rooms, biking trails, spas and golf-courses which have beautiful views of the St. Laurent River. Nay thought the inside of the mansion was kinda creepy late at night and I agree to some extent. It was a lot of fun to stay in the mansion but probably not worth a trip back.

Yosemite National Park : Two day trip to Yosemite National Park in November '09 with Faysal & Ayesha. No bear sightings despite the signs and warnings everywhere. The stay in Curry Village's tent-cabin was definitely interesting but nothing beats the Giant Sequoias in the Mariposa Grove!

San Diego Zoo : With over 4,000 animals and 880 species to see, San Diego zoo ranks as #2 zoo in the US (Columbus OH being #1). It houses the Giant Panda, one of only four in the world. My favorite was probably the Green Mamba!

Safari Park, Natural Bridge, VA : Virginia's largest and only drive-thru zoo has over 1,200 animals roaming free on a 180-acre preserve. Giraffes, Camels, herds of Zebras, Elks, Llamas, Bisons, Ostriches and many varieties of Deers, Antelopes and much more. A pair of Bengal Tigers, Kangaroos and many others in the Village safari section. Lots of fun and definitely worth a visit with just under 3 hours from Washington DC!
